Breaking Fantasy Football Draft Ties

You've done the research. You've checked the rankings and projections.

But you're on the clock, and you're stuck between two players.

When talent, opportunity, and projections are nearly identical, I use a few additional factors to break the tie:

-Vegas win totals

-Strength of schedule

-Offensive line rankings

These shouldn't completely change your rankings. Think of them as the final layer of context.

1. Vegas Win Totals

Vegas win totals can tell us a lot about the environment a player is expected to play in.

Teams projected to win more games are generally expected to have:

-Better offenses

-More scoring opportunities

-More favorable game scripts

This can be especially important for running backs. A running back on a team expected to win 11 games is more likely to benefit from positive game scripts and additional touchdown opportunities than a similarly ranked player on a team expected to win six games.

Don't automatically draft the player on the better team. But if two players are extremely close, projected team success can be a useful tie-breaker.

For context, here are the teams with double-digit win total odds (based on DraftKings as of 8/27/26):

Baltimore Ravens - 11.5

Buffalo Bills - 10.5

Cincinnati Bengals - 10.5

Detroit Lions - 10.5

Kansas City Chiefs - 10.5

LA Rams - 11.5

New England Patriots - 10.5

Philadelphia Eagles - 10.5

2. Strength of Schedule

Strength of schedule can be difficult to predict because NFL defenses change significantly from year to year.

That's why I don't make major ranking adjustments based solely on schedule.

However, if you're deciding between two similarly ranked players and one has a significantly more favorable schedule, that can help break the tie.

Use strength of schedule as a small advantage—not the foundation of your rankings.

3. Offensive Line Rankings

Offensive lines can have a major impact on fantasy production, particularly for running backs.

A strong run-blocking offensive line can create more efficient rushing opportunities, explosive plays, and goal-line success.

For quarterbacks, pass protection becomes especially important.

If you're deciding between two similarly ranked players, I often prefer the player operating behind the better offensive line.

Look at the right type of offensive line ranking. Run blocking matters more for running backs, while pass protection is especially important for quarterbacks.

Here were the top OL by run block rating (run block win rate) in '25 (per ESPN):

1) Buffalo Bills (75%)

2) LA Rams (74%)

3) Minnesota Vikings (74%)

4) Denver Broncos (74%) <- Expected to be the best OL this year

5) Chicago Bears (74%)

Note: Denver and Minnesota are returning all five of their starters.

Here were the top OL by pass protection rating (pass block win rate) in '25 (per ESPN):

My Simple Tie-Breaker Process

When deciding between two players:

First: Talent and opportunity.

Second: Role and projected volume.

Third: The offensive environment.

Finally, when they're still close: Vegas win totals, strength of schedule, and offensive line play.

The Bottom Line

Don't overthink these metrics or let them completely override your rankings.

But when you're genuinely stuck between two players, the situation around them can provide the edge you need.

Talent and opportunity build your rankings. Context breaks the tie.
